Chapter 17: Safeguard Your Environment with
Surveillance Station
Surveillance Station is a professional Network Video Recording (NVR) software bundled with DiskStation
Manager (DSM), allowing you to remotely record and monitor video footages from IP cameras which are paired
with your Synology NAS, watch live view videos, set up scheduled recording, playback recorded files via web
browser or mobile device for remote monitoring so as to safeguard your home or office environment.
This chapter explains how to install Surveillance Station, manage IP cameras, watch and record live view videos,
set up scheduled recording, playback recorded files, and use all the other comprehensive features provided by
Surveillance Station. For more detailed instructions, please see Surveillance Station Help.
To live view your IP cameras and play recordings from Surveillance Station with your iOS/Android device,
download DS cam from Apple's App Store or Android Market. For more information about DS cam, see "Chapter
22: Communicate with Mobile Devices".
Install Surveillance Station
Go to Main Menu > Package Center to install Surveillance Station. After installation, the surveillance shared
folder will be created automatically to contain your Surveillance Station data. This shared folder is read-only and
can be accessed only by users belonging to the administrators group.
Manage Surveillance Station Settings
Click the Management tab to configure the following Surveillance Station settings.
Work with Central Management System
Central management system (CMS) allows a host server to monitor the camera live view and recordings of all the
recording servers paired with it. By setting up a central management system, you can easily and effectively
manage a large Surveillance network via one single server. To enable central management system and set your
Synology NAS as either a host server or a recording server, go to the Service page.
